man the blood drive at the Lion's Club.  Pam G. handed out a sign up

sheet.  Presdient Julie, also reminded us she has 100 Taste of Kittery tickets in

hand.  Members are asked to pick up tickets from her to sell -

We are still waiting for some information to be verified before the posters can be

sent out by Marie to the club members.  Hopefully, they will be out by this

                          weekend.

Meeting Program: Agnes Charlesworth on Life & Hope in Haiti

Our speaker, Agnes Charlesworth this morning was suggested by Pauli Rines.  Agnes

showed us pictures of the project she is involved in - Life and Hope in Haiti.  She was quick

to point out that her pictures were from last summer, before the devastating earthquake

            just three weeks ago.

Our mission at Life and Hope is to:

Provide quality education to low income children

Teach valuable academic skills in life that can help lift the spirit of children

                        in the future

Provide nourishment to parents and children

Provide the school community, including families, with free medical care.

Agnes told us that there is a population of 9 million in Haiti and that half of them live on

less than a $1 per day and only half of them can read or write.  The life expectancy is

very low.  Seventy-one out of 1,000 children don't live to the age of five!  The life

expectancy there is 57 years of age versus 78 years in the US!

She explained that Haiti and the Dominican Republic are still enemies today however the

Dominicans came to their assistance immediately after the earthquake.  Haiti was the

first African Nation in the Carribean to get their freedom.

                         Epicenter. (July 2009)

She had some wonderful pictures of the children that they are hoping to get sponsors

for which will help keep the school going.  They are beautiful children - Pauli is a sponsor

of a little girl in Haiti.  Agnes has been involved in taking school supplies to the children

which were very well received!  She has also taken clothing to the children and we saw a

picture of a child with a South Berwick t-shirt on and was he ever proud of that shirt!!

The pictures of homes were not what we see here every day.  The area has many

mountains and the forests are diminishing as they have no oil or coal so everything is

cooked using wood.  Agnes could have talked a lot longer but unfortunately we ran out of

           time.

           Agnes

Agnes Charlesworth speaking on Life and Hope in Haiti.

Once again we were reminded of how lucky we are to live in the USA.  Thank you, Agnes, for a

wonderful presentation and all your efforts in Haiti.  If anyone wants to learn more about this

project, you can visit their website at www.lifeandhopehaiti.org.  It is a fantastic website!

President Julie had to scoot so Pauli Rines thanked Agnes and had her sign a book for the

           Kittery Schools Library.

Note:  Our Newsletter Editor, Dave Gooch is due back sometime today.  (HOORAY! - per

              Webmaster Marie)

50-50 Raffle:   Susie's raffle ticket was drawn.  Greg picked the two of hears for her instead of

the Joker thus losing $205.  Next time Susie should draw for herself!

(50% of the pot goes for club administration and 50% goes to the lucky individual if their

raffle ticket is chosen and they select the one joker hidden in the ever-decreasing deck of

cards. If the joker is not drawn then the pot rolls over to the next week).
