Marshwood High School Interact Club member and Rotary Club of Kittery Family member Nellie Young presented a project to fund the renovation of a school in Peru. Nellie's Interact Club is traveling to Peru at the end of February.
Nellie realized that no service work was planned for this trip. She reached out to the Rotary Club in Lima Peru and working with the Pachacamac Rotary Club, identified a need they wanted to work on at the Mis Pequenos Talentos Nursery (early elementary school), which is dealing with poor plumbing, poor water quality, damaged flooring, and lack of government funding. They need to raise $12,000. Nellie has committed to raise funds for this project. She has raised $580 to date through a Gofundme page and is now planning to meet with Rotary Clubs and reach out to corporate sponsors. The trip to Peru is scheduled for February 16 to 27th.

Nellie Young was 8 years old when her mother joined our club. Since then Nellie has been an active member in many of our service projects. As her mother Maryna became Club President and then Assistant District Governor Nellie has grown and participated in many different Rotary events. With her parents, she is already an experienced traveler She is also passionate about local community support in areas of education, environment, and food security. Participation in her school' Interact Club trip to Peru was a natural for her, but her vision was to perform some service for the hosts as part of the trip. The trip planned was not able to incorporate a service element, so Nellie contacted the Lisbon Peru Rotary club to determine what she could do to support their projects.
The Pachacamac Rotary Club of Lima identified a Nursery school (early elementary) in Curva Zapata-Pachacamac, Lima Peru, which suffered from plumbing in disrepair, with leakage and sanitation issues, , lack of clean water, and extensive building damage due to humidity. Their proposed plan would utilize a storage container as a base with windows, plumbing, flooring, cabinets, air conditioning, and water filters added with a project cost of $10,000 for the building. School supplies add $2,000 additional. Nellie committed to raise funds to support the project.
Through a GoFundMe site Nellie has raised $580 to date and has put together a detailed presentation to present to Rotary Clubs and local businesses requesting support.. The presentation uses the model of a Rotary Foundation Grant ie, A Community needs assessment, Host Club information, project budget, sustainability, and plan for securing support. In other words, the high school sophomore has assembled a very professional appearing formal presentation. Her fund drive will continue until the trip departure February 14th.

Congratulations Nellie!
