The R.W. Traip Academy Spring Normandy trip was a great learning experience, supported in part by the Rotary Club of Kittery.

to traveling students and School Principal Durgin, December 2023

In December of 2023 the Club heard from the students and staff planning a spring trip to France with a goal of learning more about the World War II Allied Invasion and sacrifices. The Club made a $500 donation to the trip. On our May 28th meeting, a number of the students who made the trip joined us and related what they had done and learned from the experience.

The trip began with a visit to Paris, before heading to the coastal cities and towns of Normandy. The students had an opportunity to visit the communities near the beach heads where the invasion occurred, they even met an individual who had lived there as a 10 year old at the time. For most, it was their first experience in a country where history is measured in centuries. Even in the key areas of fighting much of area has been rebuilt as it was. The visit to the cemeteries was a very moving moment.. Also noted though was the great food they enjoyed as well!
