At our July 8, 2025 meeting, we had the presentation of the Rotarian of the Year award and the changeover from Co-Presidents Brad Hirst and Pauli Rines to President Andy Glazer. As usual, a good mixture of recognition and roast occurred.

Before the roast commenced, out-going Co-President Pauli announced the Rotarian of the Year. After recognizing the accomplishments of several of the other club members, Pauli announced that the Rotarian of the Year award went to one of our newest club members, Bob Guay.

Pauli recognized Bob's work on putting together our public relations program and on writing grants.

The tribute Pauli was next as assorted associates of our assembly addressed her with this alliterative, AI-generated accolade:

"Pauli, a passionate and persistent person, pioneered a program to provide plates of plentiful, nutritious food to preschoolers and pupils, ensuring no one goes hungry."

"She meticulously plans and prepares speakers for Rotary meetings, promoting purposeful projects and powerful perspectives."

"Proud of her participation, Pauli also plays a pivotal role in procuring gift certificates, pulling together a pool of support for those in need."

"In her personal life, Pauli’s penchant for peaceful tea moments offers a pause, where she practices patience and personal reflection."

"Ever the generous soul, Pauli loves to present plates of her perfectly baked scones at Rotary meetings, pleasing everyone with a delicious treat and adding a pinch of joy to every gathering."

"Pauli’s profound compassion perpetually propels her to pick others up, providing a positive presence wherever she goes, perpetuating kindness and peace in every project she touches."

Pauli was asked to open packages that had previously been delivered to her home which contained a tea set with matching teapot and cups, some tea and a box of scones.

Sue then read this comment from Claire Bloom, founder of End 68 Hours of Hunger:

"I gave a brief talk as a guest speaker to the Kittery Rotary Club and literally the very next day Pauli called me and said that she had already spoken to the Superintendent of Schools in Kittery and found that there were hungry children in Kittery and she wanted to know how she could start feeding them.  The Kittery program was the second program to get started.  In March 2012.  Together with Kris Lines and Dave Gooch she's been running it continuously since 2012.  That's the kind of person she is."

Next, it was out-going Co-President Brad's turn to be recognized and roasted with this poem, again generated with AI.

Brad’s got a heart that’s wild and free,
A love for the road, a thirst for glee.
With a Harley rumbling beneath the sky,
He rides like the wind, and never asks why.

Tattooed leg, stories inked deep,
This Dancing Bear is a memory he’ll always keep.
It's his first foray into tattooing as we now know
He wears love for the bear wherever he goes.

A cold beer in hand, a grin on his face,
He’s the life of the party, always in grace.
The Grateful Dead’s tunes hum in his soul,
Their songs are his anthem, their rhythms make him whole.

So here’s to Brad, the man with the ride,
With a love for the simple, the wild, the wide.
Beer, bikes, tattoos, and a band that never fades,
He’s a legend in the making, living life his own way.

Brad's gifts included the stuffed bear to match his dancing bear tatoo, a dancing bear t-shirt and a pint glass with a slightly modified version of the four-way test.

Next, the out-going Co-President's plaques were presented

Maryna juggling Pauli's plaque and a laptop, and Brad with his plaque

Finally, as a parting shot, Sue presented Brad with a deck of cards that was 50% Jokers.

Many thanks to Pauli and Brad for serving as Co-Presidents for the past year.

And honorable mention goes to Maryna who took care of walking around with the laptop throughout the meeting so Pauli could participate from home.
