Our Next Program: Discussion of the District Conference
Last Week's News:
Guests and Happenings:
~ Visiting Rotarians: None
~ Guests: Laurie Depaul, our guest speaker
~ News:
Russ thanked the club for our $1000 suppport for the D.A.R.E. program,
with our help and those of other local businesses the graduation is funded.
Sticking to the Rotarian values of stating the truth Russ also admitted he lost
a bet against the Yankees with Obie this week and congratulated the Yankees
for their Number 1 status (currently)
.Obie responded by contributing the won one dollar bill, endorsed with Russ's recognition
of the Yankees status, saying he wanted to keep that bill in circulation. Alan inspected
the donation and agreed it clearly was marked as stated.
With that Joyce quietly contributed her "happy $1" saying her Red Sox season tickets
had just arrived!
Larry provided information on the vote on next Tueday presenting all the facts on
the issues, asking everyone to carefully considere them. Dave asked him
specifically what was his opinion of the best choices for the students of Kittery
and Larry stated, having been asked, he could state that it was his opinion that the
best choice for the students and their education was a yes vote on each of the articles
Meeting Program: .
Dave announced the the high school has a Career Exploration program in which students
can learn about available carrers and get a chance to see what skills they require.. They are
looking for local people whoo will volunteer to meet with the students, possibly
have a job visit or even have a student as an intern (Vocational Service!) . Members
are asked to consider if they can support and provide their contact information back
to Dave or to Courtney Edwards. Bill added later in the meeting that he is currently
working with this program.
Pam reminded us that Thursday June 18 is the Rotary Blood Drive, sign postings,
volunteers, and contributors are needed..
Our guest speaker today was Laurie DePaul Executor Director of the Child Abuse
Prevention Council of York County. The facts were depressing as the need is large.
The current economy is apparentkly increasing the incidents of child abuse. In one
year 888 reports of child abuse and neglect involving 1,690 children in York County
were recieved by the Department of Health and Human services
The organization's website is www.kidsfreetogrow.org,
Our good friend Jeff Furbish will be the next President of their Board of Directors.
The organization provides bags with information for all parents of newborns and they
include a small stuffed toy. They are very much in need of contributions of new,
safe, stuffed toys.
Laurie showed a very moving short film of a young child who was abused and finally
beaten to death. At the end of the program President Sue led everyone in a round
of applause for Laurie's work, as you can see the emotional impact shows
on Sue's face.

The long face on President Sue reflects the
gravity of the message
The organization's literature also gives a couple of other websites for Fun Activities
that might be worth sharing with shildren or grandchildren. The Berenstein bears are
the official Spokes Bears to prevent Child Abuse and their website has coloring pages,
doll bears and more www.berensteinbears.com/.
United way is one of the sponsors for Born Learning www.bornlearning.org, a website
dedicated to providing tips to parents and grandparents for learning on the go.
Included are tip sheets for grandpsarents, dads, and selecting childcare providers.
50-50 Raffle
(50% of the pot goes for club administration and 50% goes to the lucky individual if their
raffle ticket is chosen and they select the one joker hidden in the ever-decreasing deck of
