Last Week's News:

~ Guests: Our Guest Speaker Marina Forbes
Meeting Program: .
President Sue reminded us of the upcoming blood drive, and the World
Peace and Understanding Dinner in Portland February 28th.Ticket money
needs to be in to the District by February 19th, the cost is $40. Sue has
a club sign-up list.
Susie briefed the club on the Table of Plenty Dinner program. Kittery Estates
and the Lions Club jointly are forming one of the teams. They had over
40 guests Although they had about 17 helpers, Susie believes it can
be done by a team of 6-8 people. The club is considering whether,
and how, to support. The Table of Plenty Program provides free meals
three times a week, one day each in York, South Berwick, and now Kittery.
Each meal is provided for and served by teams of volunteers from the
community.
Our speaker today was Marina Forbes of the New England Language
Center. Marina grew up in Russia and travels back and forth frequently.
The Language Center is located in Rochester and provides foriegn
language training by innovative techniques, training for ESL teachers
on training techniques, translation services, and runs travel programs
and hosts visitors, Marina says she learned to talk fast trying to keep
in touch with friends and family while paying overseas phone call rates.

Marina was definitely a lively and fun speaker. She is also an accomplished
artist and brought some examples of her work and explained how they
are made as well as the cultural significance of them. By the end of the
meeting Russ was already planning to host a couple of foriegn visitors this summer
for a tour of the police station. For this talk Marina covered the work of the
New England Language Center, which was unknown to club members, as well as
an overview of what she does as an artist in additon to her teaching and
translating. She also has talked to groups about the Russia of today and would
make an excellant speaker on a large number of topics.

Nesting Dolls painted by Marina. Sometimes each doll was
inscribed on the bottom with a famly members name,
becoming a family heirloom
59-50 Raffle
(50% of the pot goes for club administration and 50% goes to the lucky individual if their
raffle ticket is chosen and they select the one joker hidden in the ever-decreasing deck of
cards. If the joker is not drawn then the pot rolls over to the next week).
Russ picked the winning raffle ticket and immediately
came under suspician when it turned out to be his!
However he picked the 6 of diamonds and lost $124.50
