The Rotary Club of Kittery has been in existence since 1987.  We have been involved in our local and international communities in many different ways.  We have done manual labor, donated from our pockets and raised money through fundraisers which has gone back into the community. The list below shows how we have invested in our local and international communities over the years with the aid of your very generous support at our fundriasers.

 

 

The Rotary Club of Kittery's Current Community Involvement

 

 Camp P.O.S.T.C.A.R.D. - Donation & Member Russ French is a facilitator

 

Christmas Parade - Provide and Serve Hot Chocolate and cookies

 

Community Dinner - Cash donation towards a Community Thanksgiving Dinner at St. Raphael's Church.

 

Dictionaries - Yearly we provide all 3rd graders in the Kittery School System with their own dictionary.

 

District 7780 Involvement - We have had three District Governors (our fourth District Governor is in the lineup), two District Secretaries, two Assistant District Governors, District Membership Chair, District Conference Chair, Numerous District Conference Committee Members, plus numerous other District Committee Chairs and members.  The Rotary Club of Kittery members are involved not only on the local level but the District level as well!

 

End 68 Hours of Hunger - Donation plus several members serve on the local board and several members have helped pack the bags.

 

END POLIO NOW Bridge Walk – Club members from Kittery and around District 7780 plus non-club members walk the Memorial Bridge between Kittery, Maine and Portsmouth, NH to promote the End of Polio NOW in the World.  Donations are accepted from anyone but walkers make a donation and receive an END POLIO NOW red t-shirt.

 

Fellowship Meetings/Socials - Held on the fifth Tuesday months at 5PM at a local business.

Interact Club - Sponsor for Club at Traip Academy

 

Jump Start Program at Mitchell School - Program to assist students to get up to speed just before they start kindergarten - Club provides books to these children to assist in their reading skills.

 

Kittery Block Party - Members have a yearly booth - 2015 handed out free watermelon slices

 

Kittery Fire Department 5K - Members hand out water to runners

 

Kittery Holiday Basket – Cash donation plus members collect canned goods, underwear, socks and pajamas

 

Portsmouth Music Hall Food Drive - Members provided food for this drive.

 

Recreation Department Halloween Party – Bean Bag toss games

 

Red Cross Blood Drive - Members volunteer every other month to register donors and work the canteen held at the Lions Club.

 

RLI - Rotary Leadership Institute - Members attend to learn more about Rotary and the club has two facilitators that teach at RLI around New England.

 

Rotary Club of Kittery After Hours - Co-sponsored the Chartering of this new Club with the Rotary Club of South Berwick-Eliot.

 

Rotary Club of South Berwick- Eliot - Sponsored the chartering of this new Rotary Club

 

RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) - Send two Traip Academy incoming junior Students to RYLA Camp for four days in June where they learn leadership skills.

 

Scholarship - To an adult attending a Community College.

 

Scholarships - Scholarships awarded to graduating Traip Academy seniors going on to college or to further their education.

 

Senior FREE Dinner - Members prepare & serve spaghetti dinner open to all seniors in the Town of Kittery

 

Speaker Books - Books are provided to speakers to sign instead of giving them a coffee mug or pen and then the books are donated to a Kittery School Libraries.

 

Students of the Month - Plaques at Shapleigh & Traip plus the students are honored at the club each month by attending breakfast along with family members and a teacher who tells us why they were chosen.  They pictures are being displayed at Traip starting in the 2016-17 school year.

 

Table of Plenty - Cash donation

 

Traip Academy Spanish Students - Cash Donation for transportation from Traip to Logan Airport & back for 5 students and 2 charperones.  They are doing a filed trip to Mexico during February school vacation.

Eliot Festival Days

 

Every 15 Minutes - Rotary Grant initiated by The Rotary Club of Kittery , Major Community participation – Club Member participation, Traip Academy, Kittery Police and Fire Department, Ambulance Service, Pelkey Funeral Home, York Hospital, etc.

 

Eyes of The World Discovery Center – Members helped clean up this area and set up two raised garden beds.

Kittery Christmas Tree Lights - Cash donation and members assisted in putting up the lights - (Frank Clark driving force)

Kittery Seaside Festival - Held at Fort Foster where the club had a dunking booth – Club members and town officials volunteered to be dunked!

 

Kittery Youth Connection - Sponsor, cash donation and assistance

 

Mitchell School Lawn Fete - Had bean bag toss games for the children

 

Members moved a Handicapped resident

 

Pauli Rines Scholarship - Cash donation

 

Pine Tree Society - Cash donation

 

Project Graduation - Cash donation

 

Recreation Department Sport Teams - Club has sponsored numerous sports teams through the Recreation Department

 

Special Olympics - Cash Donation and member involvement at the event.

 

Traip Academy Climbing Wall – Contribution

 

Traip Academy Greenhouse - Club members constructed the building that the high school had purchased

 

York County Community College - Donation towards scholarships

 

Youth Exchange Students - support a foreign exchange student through Rotary International to attend the local high school for a year with a place to live and a small allowance or send a local Traip Academy student to a foreign land for a year of high school.

End Polio NOW - Eradication of Polio Club Donations

 

Carpentry tools for Guatemala school graduates - Donation to purchase tools for these graduates

 

Crutches for Africa - Members collect crutches, etc. to be shipped to Africa via Rotary District 7780

 

The Rotary Foundation – Members annually donate to this Rotary International Foundation and the proceeds are used around the world to help with water, literacy, food, medicine, outfit schools and hospitals with necessary equipment.

 

Group Study Exchange (GSE) - Prior to the discontinuance of the program we had hosted team members in their homes.

Afghanistan Girls School - Donation to purchase desks and supplies for school

 

AMIGOS Buckets - Individual Rotarians purchased bucket and food to fill it

 

Clothes to Kenya - Members collected donated clothes and club paid to ship them to Kenya

 

Eben Ezer School in Haiti - Donation to assist school

 

Fire Truck for Honduras - Purchased from the Town of Kittery for $1,000, sent to Honduras and delivered by the National Guard Spring 2002 (driving force was Pamela Gray).

 

Friends Forever - Hosted students and Chaperones from Northern Ireland both Catholic and Protestant Students in their homes for dinner.

 

Guatemala Literacy Project - Cash donations plus two members went on a trip to Guatemala

 

Guatemala Project - Water Filtration Project The project will include the development of a curriculum at the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala in Mazatenango. The curriculum will contain basic sanitation and safe drinking water principles, incorporating current, locally available water treatment options and the design and construction of slow sand (biological) water filters. The curriculum will be used in a course which will include instructions for building the filters

 

Haiti Earthquake Relief - Cash donation

 

Iraq - Purchased fleece throws that were shipped to Iraq

 

Life & Hope Haiti - Cash Donation

 

Matching Grant #7989 with the Rotary Club of Kyalami in South Africa - This was to assist Unity College in Randgure, South Africa to provide books, equipment and supplies for a school for children with disabilities in Randburg, South Africa in May 1998.

 

Matching Grant to Feed 60 Street Children in the Philippines - Rotary Grant in October 1998 pushed by Past President Harrison Lemont.

 

Rotaplast - Cash donations for surgical teams to go to other countries to perform cleft lip and palate surgeries on up to 200 children in a week.

 

Rotary District 7320 NYC/WTC Disaster Relief Fund - $500 donation November 7, 2001

 

Sierra Leone Prenatal Kits - Donation to purchase kits

 

Shelter Box – The club contributed to purchase a Shelter Box which consists of a disaster relief tent for a family, thermal blankets and groundsheets, water storage and purification equipment, solar lamps, cooking utensils, a basic tool kit, mosquito nets and a children’s activity pack.
